Sunset Senior Session in Western Maryland

Why Sunset Sessions Are Pure Magic for Senior Portraits

Let’s talk about one of my *favorite* types of sessions to shoot — **sunset sessions**. These sessions take place about **40 minutes before the sun officially dips below the horizon**, and the light during this time? Absolutely *dreamy*.

Photographers call this time “**golden hour**,” and it lives up to the name every single time. The light is warm, soft, and flattering — it wraps around you, adds a golden glow to your skin, and makes everything from flowing hair to fluttering dresses look like they’re straight out of a magazine. It’s that kind of light that doesn’t need a filter. It naturally flatters every skin tone and gives your photos that radiant, glowing finish.

What’s a Sunset Session?

A sunset session is either a **standalone session** — 100% dedicated to that warm golden light — or an **add-on to your senior session**.

These are especially perfect for seniors who:

* Want a more **whimsical, romantic, or ethereal vibe** in their photos

* Love **nature, wildflower fields, mountain views**, or golden grassy meadows

* Want to highlight a special outfit — like a gorgeous, flowing dress (more on that below!)

* Just love that golden, glowing aesthetic you always see on Pinterest or Instagram

Style Tip: Wear the Dress

If you're doing a sunset session, this is **your excuse to go all in on wardrobe**. I'm talking **flowing, romantic dresses** that move beautifully in the breeze. The kind of dress that twirls effortlessly and makes you feel like the main character — because you *are*.

Think:

* Maxi dresses with soft, natural movement

* Earth tones, soft pastels, or bold colors that pop against a golden background

* Barefoot-in-the-field vibes or cowboy boots for some personality

Movement is key — these dresses catch the wind just right, and when you spin or twirl, *magic* happens. (Yes, I’ll be guiding you through all the posing — and yes, we will get that twirl shot!)

Real Examples

In this post, I’m sharing images of several seniors who chose to do a sunset session. Each one brought her own personality and style — and as you’ll see, golden hour was the perfect backdrop for every single one.

Whether you're a free spirit, a glam queen, a nature lover, or somewhere in between — **this type of session is all about capturing you at your most radiant**.

Thinking About Booking a Sunset Session?

If you’re a current KMP senior or you're just getting started planning your shoot, a **sunset add-on** could be the perfect way to elevate your session. You’ll get a totally different vibe, a second look, and even more beautiful images to choose from.

Spots for golden hour are limited — there’s only *one* sunset a day, after all — so if you know you want that glowy goodness, let’s get you on the calendar early.

Summer is generally the perfect time for sunset sessions. The days are longer, the trees are full, and we get those warm, golden skies that set the perfect tone for dreamy photos. That said, I want to keep it real — I can’t guarantee a stunning sunset. Weather, cloud cover, and even wildfires in nearby states can all play into how dramatic (or not-so-dramatic) the sky looks. Even if the sunset itself is subtle, the light during this time of day is still soft, warm, and incredibly flattering. You’ll still walk away with beautiful, glowing images — sunset or not.

Have questions about what to wear or how to style your sunset session? I’ve got you. From outfit inspo to helping you pick the perfect location, I’ll walk you through it all during your pre-session Zoom consult.

Let’s make golden hour your hour to shine.
